Sponges represent an essential component of benthic ecosystems (Diaz & Rutzler, 2001), playing valuable ecological functions (examples) and affecting community composition by competition, however, along history they have been not been considered the the attention they deserve, creating gap of knowledge specially in terms of life traits as life spam, growth rates or reproduction cycles (McMuray et al., 2010; Rohde & Schupp, 2011).
In here we observeChondrosia reniformis Nardo, 1833, a massive lobate that can be coloured in variable shades from the grey to the brown-violet. This is a peculiar sponge species containing a high abundance of collagen, a protein of great interest for the pharmaceutical and nutraceutical industries.
