There are a number of carved rocks in this hidden corner near Eggerness Farm in Galloway. Their carvings are so unusual they are kept covered with turf and imprecise locations are given on Canmore & Pastmap. However, this one is easy to locate and it had been left exposed and with large stones on its surface by someone - not good. Before I left, I removed these and cut fresh turf to re-cover it properly.
The rock has two conventional cup marks. But also has three, highly unusual, animal carvings. The obvious stag on the top left is thought to be Pictish. Below that is another, smaller, stag but the front of its face and body have been truncated by the loss of some stone along the prominent central crack. Both look partly incised but with much pecked enhancement of the lines.
At the bottom there is a horse-like animal. It looks cruder and is pecked out. There are horses on another rock nearby and I wonder if the Pictish carvers have enhanced & added to earlier carvings here, in their own style?
