More model informationThis is a 16th-18th Century iron eel spear from Linlithgow Palace. Fish was a regular dish in medieval Scotland and this five-pronged eel spear or leister was one way to catch dinner.
Eating meat during Lent and on Wednesdays, Fridays and Saturdays was forbidden by the church. Eels, herring, pike, salmon and bream were a common substitute.
Wicker eel traps and barbed eel spears like this one were used to catch eels in lochs.
