Dyed Agate - Turnbull Blue (var. of Chalcedony)3D ModelNoAI
Locality: Brazil
No.: 2103
Size: 8.8 x 6.2 x 6 cm
Formula: SiO2
Description: Chalcedony is a cryptocrystalline form of silica, composed of very fine intergrowths of Quartz. Banded Chalcedonies (a sub-variety of Quartz, whether parallel or concentric) are called Agates.
Agate is very often dyed in different - many times intense and unreal looking - colors. Chalcedony is composed of microscopic fibers of quartz mixed with a small amount of moganite, a form of silicon dioxide different than quartz. The porous structure of many chalcedonies allow chemical solutions to infiltrate the stone, making it possible to create chemical reactions inside the stone itself. For the blue (“Turnbull Blue”) color different techniques are known (i.e., potassium ferricyanide).
