Hourglass-shaped hand drums are common in Papua New Guinea. One type of hourglass-shaped drum, called the kundu, appears on the Papua New Guinean coat of arms. These drums are typically used during formal occasions, religious ceremonies, and celebrations.
This piece was collected by wildlife photographer and film-maker Mr Des Bartlett, who in 1953 spent several months along the Sepik River filming ‘Among the Headhunters’.
