The BOA Island figure is a Janus Figure, located in CALDRAGH GRAVEYARD: on Boa Island Co. Fermanagh, Northern Ireland. The carving shows a two faced male figure back to back, with hair intertwined. There is a socket between the heads which may have held an additional carving, removeable headpiece but it’s function is unknown. The figure is connected with the Janus or two faced idols of Roman era, but there is little known about the people who constructed it or for what reason. There is clear evidence for a group living in the Cavan, Fermanagh region whose beliefs focused on multi faced beings. A triple head from Cavan, and Iron Age heads from the area, as well as a head carved with a Rams head suggest a ‘head cult’ in the region. While not a Sheela na Gig is often erroneously associated with exhibitionist carvings. More Details
