Dodecahedral Garnet (Almandine) - growth layers3D ModelNoAI
Locality: Madagascar
Size: 2.5 cm x 2.5 cm x 2.5 cm
Formula: Almandine - Fe(II)3Al2(SiO4)3
The Garnet Supergroup is composed of several minerals with related chemical formulas. The generic formula for the common Garnets is: X(II)3Y(III)2Si3O12, where: X represents Ca, Fe(II), Mn, or Mg Y represents Al, Cr, or Fe(III)
Description: Garnet is not a single mineral, but a group contains closely related, isomorphous minerals that form a series with each other. The Garnets are important minerals, and are primarily known for their gemstone uses.
The common Garnets can be divided into two subgroups: (i) Pyr-al-sp-ite (these include Pyrope, Almandine, and Spessartine - garnets containing aluminum (Al) as their second element) and (ii) U-gr-and-ite (Uvarovite, Grossular, and Andradite - garnets containing calcium (Ca) as their first element).
