The use of dentalia shells in Athabscan regalia represents high status. The shells are a trade item that likely originates from the Vancouver area of Canada. The dentalia shell necklace is one of the five symbols used for wayfinding at the Alaska Native Heritage Center. It was commissioned by the Center directly with the artist.
