Pulsar P1 was developed jointly by Hamilton Watch Co. and Electro/Data, Inc. It was released to the public on April 4th, 1972, with an 18-carat gold case and the crystal was made out of a solid slab of synthetic ruby. The world’s first all-electronic digital watch was also the first to use a digital display – created with LEDs. Pulsar P1 was initially sold for $2100 ($12,400 in 2016!!). Only 400 units were made. The P1 was worn by such notable figures as Elvis Presley and Yul Bryner. Pulsar P1 has a single button which when pushed displayed the hours and minutes on the to 4 digit display (no date, day of the week, alarm or other functionality). It had 25 individual tiny integrated circuit chips and over 400 gold connections, each of which had to be painstakingly hand soldered.
