The etymology of the word “bistrot” dates back to 1814, when Paris was occupied by the soldiers of the Russian army of Tsar Alexander I. They (supposedly) used to shout “быстро, быстро” (“bistro, bistro” meaning “quick, quick”) in Parisian bars to ask for a quick drink.
