Daspletosaurus Exploding Skull3D Model
How do you display a dinosaur skull that is too delicate to be put back together or cast? Our scientists used photogrammetry to create a digital replica of this Daspletosaurus skull. Each bone was replicated as a 3D model (except the maxilla and dentary, which were traditionally cast). We then had these models 3D printed. Using models of the individual pieces, we also created a merged model of the skull, and virtually pulled pieces apart to create the exploded side. This then formed the design for what the specimen would look like on display. This is the first time we have used 3D-printing technology to create casts for display. The technology offers us a new and exciting way to make casts of delicate specimens. Learn more about the partially exploded skull of Daspletosaurus torosus.
