A Bichrome Ware Cypriot squat amphora dating to the Cypro-Geometric or Archaic period, 1050-600 BCE.
The inside of the mouth is painted, while the neck is decorated with sets of lines and wavy bands. Below is a frieze of spots, and the shoulder with is painted three red bands alternating with sets of lines. The twin loop handles are painted, and feature red and black cross-hatched panels between. Ther is a red band between sets of lines below, double lines to the lower body, and a band and set of lines over the painted foot. The amphora has a height of 295mm.
The amphora is on display as part of the ‘Cypriot Pottery of the Bronze and Iron Ages’ exhibition of the Hellenic Museum of Melbourne, and is on loan from the Peter Mitrakas and Mary Ann Savas collection.
