Cremation Barrow West Heslerton3D ModelNoAI
Geophysicals surveys in the Vale of Pickering have revealled over 3,000 very small ring-ditch features, interpreted as small Cremation Barrows or Barrowlets. A recently discovered Cremation Barrow may be one of these. This model shows the exposed ovate ring-ditch, enclosing a roughly 2m diameter area, and a small cremation pit with fragements of cremated bone at the surface. Part of the cremation remained in situ although disturbed by animal action, seen throughout this modelled surface. It is hoped that sufficent material survives to secure a Carbon Fourteen date for these as yet undated monuments. A possible post-hole and a pit are located to the west of the ring-ditch. The pockmarked nature of the surface shows the massive amount of burrowing by moles, mice and more recently rabbits in the natural soft sand. The feature had formerly been buried beneath blown sands which, over the last 50 years, had been truncated by increasingly mechanised and deeper ploughing.
