Revolutionary War American espionage has its roots in the Revolutionary War, specifically in the network known as the Culper Spy Ring. At the center of this ring, appointed by General George Washington to provide military intelligence from the British headquarters in New York City, was Major Benjamin Tallmadge.
Congressman After the war, he was appointed postmaster of Litchfield, Connecticut, in 1792 and was the first president of the Phoenix Branch Bank. In 1801, he was elected as a Federalist to the Seventh Congress and to the next seven succeeding Congresses, serving until 1817. Declining to be a candidate for re-nomination, he engaged in mercantile pursuits and was an importer until his death.
