Cobalt-bearing Calcite and Malachite on matrix3D ModelNoAI
Locality: Kalukuluku Mine, Shaba Province, Democratic Republic of Congo
No.: 1279
Size: 7.8 x 4.2 x 3.6 cm
Formula: Cobalt-bearing Calcite - (Ca,Co)CO3; Malachite - Cu2(CO3)(OH)2
Description: An attractive cobaltoan Calcite (a variety of Calcite containing Co2+ replacing Ca) specimen from the famous Shaba Province, Democratic Republic of Congo. The intense neon-pink cobalt-bearing Calcite crystals provide a gorgeous contrasting background for the sparkling dark green, primary Malachite spray that measures few millimeters. It is easy to confuse cobaltoan Calcite with two other carbonates; Rhodochrosite and Stichtite, because all three are described as red to pink minerals.
