Poorly preserved masonry remains of Clonoghil Castle (dims. 11.3m N-S x 11.3m E-W x wall T 2m) standing in the northern quadrant of a circular shaped earthwork (OF035-014004-) on the north-east edge of a low natural ridge (70m OD), overlooking the Camcor River valley 100m to the north-east. The ground falls away steeply to the north-east running down to the southern bank of the Camcor River which flows from west to east. This section of the river forms the townland boundary with Clonoghil Lower (Cluain Achaille Uachtarach). This townland lies in the barony of Ballybritt, in the parish of Birr, in the medieval Gaelic territory of Ely O’Carroll (Éile Uí Chearbhaill) which stood in medieval province of Munster. The castle stands on the demesne lands of Syngefield House (OF035-034----) standing 220m to the NNW. Birr Castle stands 1.9km to the west in the townland of Townparks which is the adjoining townland, the boundary of which is formed by the Camcor River which flows through the historic centre of Birr town.
