City of Angels is a show set in 1940s Los Angeles, following both a successful detective novelist as he writes a movie, and the film noir he is writing. This dual narrative requires scenes played in black & white and in full color.
When I think about film noir, the first thing I see is the image of a hard boiled detective, staring out his window, with strong bars of light and shadow falling across his face, cast by a street lamp through the slats of his office shutters. This image became my inspiration for the entire set.
Additionlly, the script delineates over 28 unique locations in 40 scenes, which requires a vast amount of storage.
