This is a Chimalli, used by the Aztecs. The front is covered in featherwork that would be woven into it. The back is composed of woven reed with sticks to reinforce it. The leather hanging below the shield makes a lot of sense in the context of Aztec warfare, because their weapons were mostly made up of obsidian blades they had to mostly protect from slashes so the leather added a lot of protection for only a little more weight.
As the model is designed for use in Unreal Engine the leather below the shield is intended to be a cloth simulation. For the sake of uploading to Sketchfab I exported a frame of the simulation from Unreal which is why this mesh is triangulated.
