More model informationChalcedony is microcrystalline silica (SIO₂). Chemically it is identical to quartz. Mineralogically it is mostly made of α-quartz, but also contains the silica polymorph moganite, and aslo variable amounts of pore space. Physical properties in hand specimen are alomost identical to quartz, with the exception that density can be slightly less due to pore space. Likewise, lustre is typically different, with chalcedony having a waxy lustre rather than a vitreous one. Other properties such as conchoidal fracture and hardness are identical to quartz.
Agate is a banded variety of chalcedony.
