More model informationThis is a 3D representation of a catastrophe fold as developed by French mathematician Rene Thom (1972) using a branch of mathematics known as Topology. Catastrophe models are able to describe phenomena that diverge, are subject to sudden shifts, and are discontinuous through folds in the surfaces that relate different equilibrium states. In this model increasing stress forces jumps between two possible states. The higher the stress the more abrupt the final outcome will seem.
