This fragmentary architectural slab, which bears part of a Latin inscription, may have been set into a wall or building. The inscription, which may have been an epitaph, consists of three incomplete lines of lettering, neatly laid out and separated by guidelines. The surviving letters are ‘..EAED. // [ABINFANTI // [.T]RIXQVEV[A]’.
TRIX in the bottom row indicates that the inscription is in memory of a woman, while AB INFANTI in the middle row suggests she that came here to Whitby as a child. It is possible that she was a member of the Anglo-Saxon monastic community.
