A White Painted Ware Cypriot juglet dating to the Middle or Late Bronze Age, 1800-1450 BCE.
This handmade loop handle juglet is decorated with two friezes of parallel veritcal red lines on the upper body, with a lower body of wavy horizontal lines. The base is quartered with wavy lines, each quadrant featuring a dot. There are parallel bands on the neck. Small juglets such as these are believed to have been used for precious liquids such as high grade oil. The loop handle may have been used to hang the juglet from a string. The juglet has a height of 112mm.
The juglet is on display as part of the ‘Cypriot Pottery of the Bronze and Iron Ages’ exhibition of the Hellenic Museum of Melbourne, and is on loan from the Peter Mitrakas and Mary Ann Savas collection.
