Overlooking the River Barrow, high on the eastern slopes of Brandon Hill in County Kilkenny lies an enigmatic monument that has been recorded in the Archaeological Survey of Ireland as a moated site. It was described in 1849 as a “quadrangular fort with about half a dozen small stone cells inside”.
Today the monument is overgrown and surrounded by forestry, which makes it difficult to decipher. In 2019 the monument was ‘adopted’ by Tyndall Mountain Club as part of the Heritage Council’s Adopt a Monument scheme. The group aims to develop a better understanding of the site in order to better protect it, and to share its story as part of the rich heritage of Brandon Hill.
Original survey data captured using Trimble TX8 terrestrial laser scanner as the site is heavily forested and a UAV survey failed to capture the monument benath the canopy. Point cloud data was subsequentailly meshed and textured using Geomagic Design X and Substance Painter
