Boyle Cistercian Abbey - Boyle Sheela3D ModelNoAI
Sheela-na-Gig3d was supported by the Heritage Council of Ireland Identified as a Sheela on guided literature at Boyle Cirstercian Abbey (June 2017). The carvings is located at the capital of a column at the western end of the Naive to the left of the modern entrance to the site. The carving is unusual, but it is does not fit into the sheela style. There are no clear features such as breasts or vulva on the carving. The carvings is a ‘wedge’ formed capital showing a head with clearly defined eyes, nose, ears and open mouth. Below the head there are two unusual carvings. At first I identified these has hands or possible angels, on close inspection they appears to be two animals. To the left is a beast hanging upside down, with a small head, long stretched out body. To the right is a beast with it’s mouth open and a long body. It is possible that this carving depicts the story of David and the Lion/bear 1 Samuel 17:36 The Gundestrup Cauldron.
