Cerro Blanco Protected Forest was established in 1989. It’s currently comprised of semi-deciduous forest, ecosystems that are poorly represented in Ecuador’s national system of protected areas. The expansion of the city of Guayaquil represents a major threat to the integrity of the forest.
Both local and national authorities have begun to plan works that could have a major impact on the forest, such as the construction of alternative roads to the coast, gas pipelines, among others. The Ecuadorian dry forest is also critically endangered due to indiscriminate logging.
Through the conservation and restoration of the Tropical Dry Forest by the Pro Bosque Foundation, some important ecological services related to water, carbon sequestration, biodiversity, recreational opportunities, among others, are maintained.
