It was recovered from within a Medeival midden deposit during excavations in 2001. Stylus’ are used in conjunction with wax tablets and are frequently found at scholastic and ecclesiastic sites.
Abbeys were the centres of literacy in the medieval period, and monks would have spent many hours copying and illustrating manuscripts, as well as keeping accounts and records of the abbey’s day to day business.
