More model informationA limestone block, pulled from the Bunte-Breccia ejecta blanket at Ries crater. Ejecta blankets are material thrown from the crater during crater excavation, in the form of an crater-ward-dipping ‘ejecta curtain’. Once they land they flow along the ground forming a layer surrounding the crater known as an ejecta-blanket. The block here shows characteristic jigsaw-breccia textures, indicating movement as a ‘debris-avalanche’. This is where in-situ/in-flow brecciation and associated shock waves jiggle the clasts against each-other, allowing the rock mass to move as a fluid. This appears to be how ejecta blankets move across the ground once they land having been thrown outwards from the impact crater.
