Images of pilgrimage sites (tirtha-patas) have been a popular form of Jain art for centuries, becoming especially common during the 19th century, when Indians could more readily undertake long-distance pilgrimages by train. In contemporary transnational Jain communities, photographs, paintings, sculptures, and chhod patas depicting renowned tirthas displayed in homes and temples offer adherents the blessing-filled viewing (darshana) of sacred sites on an everyday basis.
