More model informationAncient Egyptian amulet of the god Bes. Bes takes the form of a dwarf with a lion’s mane, ears, and tail, and wears an elaborate plumed headdress. He also had a female counterpart known as Beset. Bes was known as a protector of households, and particularly mothers, children, and childbirth. Bes later took on a more general protective function and became more widely associated with fertility, sexuality, and war. As such, Bes became a popular figure in later periods, and his image is often found on amulets.
