From the Museum: “This circa 1650-1670 bottle, also called a Bartmann jug, is a type of salt-glazed stoneware manufactured in Europe during the 16th and 17th centuries; stoneware was a key export of Germany at this time. The signature detail is the bearded face on the neck of the vessel. Bottles, jugs and pitchers were made in various sizes for a multitude of uses including storage and transport of food or drink.”
