This marble statue was first located at the Heerlen mine called * Oranje-Nassau III*, and was worshiped by the miners of the region who sought for her protection before going down the shaft.
In the year 1974, the mine closed and turned into a now residential area called Rennemig. Saint Barbara’s marble statue is one of the scarce remains of the former mine. Upon the shaft formerly leading to the mine, a school and a kindergarden have been built. The statue had a permanent place on the side wall of the Ondergrondse Vak School’s (OVS) building for decades (Verhaal, 2015). In 2005, the statue was relocated to the Netherlands Mijnmuseum in Heerlen where she still remains.
