More model informationAs arthropods (like insects and crustaceans) grow, they shed their hardened outer cuticle in a process called ecdysis. The moulted exoskeleton, called an exuvia, is sloughed allowing the soft-bodied arthropod underneath to puff up its body to a larger size before its new cuticle hardens once again. This moult came from an Asian shore crab (Hemigrapsus sanguineus) that lives in one of our marine aquaria at the Nature Lab.
