This palm grows up to 25m tall, with a straight, slender stem. The palm fronds are up to 150cm long. Malay people have a tradition of chewing the seeds. Alkaloids in the plant promote the secretion of saliva, intestinal juice and sweat. They are toxic to intestinal parasites in animals. There is a widespread tradition of chewing betel nut with betel leaf, and in some regions, this is associated with religious or marriage ceremonies. The nuts are used in traditional Chinese and Ayurvedic medicine.
