During conservation work in 2009 it was recognised as an “appearance door” where Henry I would survey South Purbeck and show off his wife and family […]The appearance door is the best example of Romanesque or Norman mouldings remaining in the castle. Using traditional stone working tools, National Trust volunteers have been working on a reproduction of the door. The arch is resting on a semi-circular ‘centering’ or ‘former’ as it is called today. Once the arch is constructed it becomes self-supporting and the centering is removed.
