This kind of commemorative medals were given to each one of the participants of the Antarctic Expeditions by the Italian National Antarctic Program (PNRA) until ~2005. This medal was given to the late Prof. Carlo Stocchino, physical oceanographer and meteorologist, who had the merit of helping Italy to adhere to the Antarctic Treaty in 1982 and made possible the complex logistic of the first Italian Expedition to Antarctica in 1985-1986. In that expedition, Prof. C. Stocchino played the role of coordinator and scientific leader. These medal, together with a conspicuous quantity of memorabilia, archival documents and rare books which belonged to Prof. Carlo Stocchino, was kindly donated by the Stocchino’s family to the University of Genoa in 2022. All these precious materials are currently under revision and will be made freely available to the community after having been digitalized.
