Animal-shaped clay figurine are often found in eastern Japan, from the late to latest Jomon period. This figurine is 16.3 cm long and is the largest in Japan. It expressively expresses a dog barking at something with its ears and tail upright, its paws stretched out, and its mouth wide open. Is this dog challenging its prey, intimidating a suspicious person, or fawning upon its owner? You can imagine the various thoughts that the Jomon people put into this figurine, just because it has no eyes.
