Located in the North Section- Patio del Sol (Courtyard of the Sun) of the Great Plaza of the Maya Site of Copan.
Commissioned by Yax Pasaj Chan Yopaat (Ruler 16, reigned 763-822; previously known as Yax Pac, Madrugada, New Sun-at-Horizon) These silhouette sculpture portray feathered vision serpents and are unique to Copan. It is believed that originally they were part of the decoration of Structure 3. Vision serpents are the conduit between the earth and the supernatural realms. They connect a Maya king to his source of spiritual power from the gods and deified ancestors (Asociacion Copan, 2010, p.195).
