This is a 5-chamber hemi-section of the posterior half of a whole human heart that was donated for research. The donor was a 78 year old female with a history of smoking. The cardiac adipose tissue has been separated from the heart in order to showcase its thickness and coverage of the posterior side of the heart. Adipose tissue aids in lipid and energy homeostasis as a source of energy for the myocardium and as a buffer for excess free fatty acids. This model shows a great view of the tricuspid and mitral valves as well.
We partner with LifeSource to receive donated organs deemed not viable for transplant and the University of Minnesota Anatomy Bequest Program to work with organs that were donated for Medical Education and Research.
