Solving the issue of anti-tank defense, the Germans considered that making the guns mobile was much more profitable than accompanying each infantry unit with a gun. And since after the defeat of France they got a large amount of captured equipment, they rolled up their sleeves and began to turn tanks into self-propelled guns. It seems not a tricky thing: to remove the tower, to weld a box on top to protect the gun crew. Insert an anti-tank gun into the same box, unscrewing the wheels from the carriage. Add a walkie-talkie to communicate with the command and you’re done.
The resulting “Frankenstein” was very unstable, with a small power reserve, without any protection from the weather. But on the other hand, this is definitely better than rolling a cannon across the battlefield by the forces of the gunners themselves.
