2 A stone foundation at lecture hall3D Model
This is the real foundation stone of the lecture hall that remains at the Musashi Kokubunji site. In 741, Emperor Shomu prayed for the protection of the nation and ordered the construction of Kokubunji and nunneries in various countries. In Musashi Province, a vast area at the foot of the Kokubunji cliff line near Kokufu (present-day Fuchu City) was chosen. It prospered as a political and cultural center along with the Kokufu, but it is said that it was destroyed in a fire during the Battle of Bubegawara (1333) between Nitta Yoshisada’s army and the Kamakura Shogunate’s army at the end of the Kamakura period.
