Brixham trawlers were first designed and built in Devon in the early 1800s for fishing in the English Channel. The sail and mast configuration of the trawlers meant they could quickly arrive at the fishing grounds and were powerful enough to drag large nets behind them when fishing. By 1880 Brixham had one of the world’s largest fishing fleets and the efficient design of these wooden sailing trawlers was adopted by boat builders around Britain. The trawlers were popular with maritime artists and model makers because of their elegant design and distinctive red sails. The maker and donor of this model Dr Alexander K Tulloch (1918-2006) was not only a distinguished Ophthalmic surgeon at Dundee’s Ninewells Hospital, but also an accomplished model maker, scale model engineer, artist, mountaineer and celebrated musician. Dr Tulloch’s wife was named Dorothy.
This model was brought to you with help from Museums Galleries Scotland as part of the ‘Exploring the Ship Model Collection at the McManus’ project.
