17th century Double Dutch planking (NCN 34303)3D Model
Sample of a double planking shiphull of a 17th century merchant ship. The shipwreck (most likely a Dutch Catship) measures 31x6m, was found in the Dutch intertidal zone Waddensea, near Kornwerderzand by Stichting Archeos Fryslan. The outer planking made of 240x30mm pinewood boards, have been nailed with iron 5mm square shaped nails to the oak inner planking. The inner oak strakes (5-6cm thick) are fastened to the frames with treenails with a diameter of 33mm. These treenails are ‘locked’ into the oak board with a square oak wedge, hammered into its center. There are traces of a waterproofing caulking material in between the double planking. It could be made of hemp rope or animal hair. The inner and outer plank of this model can be observed on both sides in seperate models posted on Sketchfab. This wreck located in 2022 is still under investigation in 2023 and has been reported to the Dutch Cultural Heritage Agency (RCE)
