More model informationThis is a ziyaarat (mausoleum of a Muslim holy person) on the island of Hithadhoo, Laamu Atoll (LAM-HTD-3). Local tradition holds that it is the burial site of an unidentified body that was found washed up on the shore nearby. That grave is marked by elaborately carved coral head and foot stones, housed in a small, sand-floored structure within a walled enclosure. The larger compound in which this is situated contains fragments of other coral gravestones, and a well. The surrounding wall of the compound incorporates carved coral stones that appear to have been repurposed from the ruins of an earlier Buddhist site nearby.
The ziyaarat was abandoned as an active ritual site in 1984.
