Situated on the Coromandel Range in the North Island of Aotearoa New Zealand, the Mahakirau Forest Sanctuary is a 600 hectare private estate. The land is ‘forever protected’ under a covenant with the QEII National Trust, who describe Mahakirau as “outstanding in ecology and wildlife value”“. The covenant, legally bound in perpetuity, guarantees multi-generational guardianship, and sustains the projects long-term goals, to enhance the Internationally Significant Natural Area (SNA).
The Mahakirau Forest Sanctuary is managed by the multiple landowner community who share stewardship values. An Incorporated Society was formed in 2001 to responsibly govern shared resources, habitat restoration and native species protection. The core management plan is to implement the most cost-effective and efficient pest and predator control, and biodiversity restoration programmes, for ecosystem resilience.
